Avoid These Holiday Toxins to Keep Your Pets Safe

Avoid These Holiday Toxins to Keep Your Pets Safe

Christmas is one of the most anticipated holidays of the year, and for a good reason. There are many fun activities to enjoy with your family and friends, from decorating your house to exchanging gifts. However, many people don’t realize that specific holiday decoration can be dangerous for pets.

Tinsel and Garland

One of the most common types of toxic decorations is tinsel and garlands. These sparkly ornaments may seem harmless at first glance, but they can cause serious injury if ingested by a pet. Tinsel is particularly dangerous, as it is small enough to lodge in your pet’s stomach, intestines, or esophagus.

If your pet chews on decorations in your home, it is a good idea to avoid using tinsel and garlands altogether. Although, if you choose these decorations around your house, keep them out of reach of pets at all times. Move the decorations higher up on the tree than usual, or secure them from reaching paws with tape or other means.

Pine Needles and Cones

Another typical holiday decoration that can harm pets is pine needles and cones. When lodged in a pet’s mouth or throat, they can lead to choking hazards and even puncture wounds. If you have a cat who enjoys playing with pine needles, it is a good idea to provide an alternative toy they can chew on safely, such as a toy mouse or catnip-stuffed ball.

Christmas lights

Other dangerous decorations for pets include Christmas lights. Many animals are attracted to the bright, flashing lights and may try to chew on them, which can lead to electrocution. In addition, many pets have been known to eat miniature light bulbs from trees and other decorations, which can be harmful if ingested.
